Where are we?

Today I made my yearly update to the Western Great Lakes membership distribution map. For the curious, we have 180 ASPRS members in our region. Not surprisingly, most of our WGL members are clustered around the major urban centers of Minneapolis, Madison, Chicago, and Indianapolis. The City of Sheboygan also stands out on the map, thanks primarily to the presence of ASPRS sustaining member AeroMetric in the city. At the end of March 2012, ASPRS had just under 4,000 active members nationwide.

ASPRS-WGL visits UW-Madison

Many thanks go out to Dr. Sam Batzli with the University of Wisconsin-Madison Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) for hosting a gathering of the ASPRS Western Great Lakes Region! Sam and Dr. Steve Ackerman gave an excellent overview of SSEC and their Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies.  Sam also provided a brief presentation on the new Suomi NPP satellite, and his own efforts to integrate geospatial principles into the wide range of project activities of SSEC.

ASPRS EGLR-WGLR Joint Meeting set for June 22nd

Make plans now to attend the ASPRS Eastern Great Lakes – Western Great Lakes Joint Summer 2012 Meeting at the Michigan Tech Research Institute (MTRI), located on the northeast side of Ann Arbor, Michigan.  The day-long meeting and evening social event takes place on Friday, June 22nd, starting at 9:30am.

June is a great time to visit southeast Michigan!  We will be having presentations by ASPRS members, industry representatives, and a field visit to cover technologies such as LiDAR, radar, and close-range photogrammetry – and this will be a great chance to get to know your fellow ASPRS members better.

The overall theme of the meeting is “Using Multiple Data Sources to Enhance Geospatial Understanding.  For more information, please contact the meeting organizer, EGLR member Colin Brooks of MTRI.  Registration and hotel information is available in the meeting flyer.

Rubber Chicken (Camilla) Flies into Solar Radiation Storm

No, this isn't a joke... but I admit I had to check the date of this posting to make sure it wasn't April 1.  Check out the video of this project developed by some high school kids in California... very cool.
