ASPRS-WGL Wisconsin “Spotlight Series” Event Recap

The Western Great Lakes region of the ASPRS sponsored a “Spotlight Series” event in Madison, Wisconsin on October 26th at the Edgewater Hotel in downtown Madison. WGL Regional president Dave Hart, CP, President of Continental Mapping Consultants, organized this event.

This meeting included ASPRS members, non members, students, and UW-faculty from the Dane County and surrounding areas who were interested in discussing geospatial ideas that affect the remote sensing and photogrammetry industry as well as networking with other professionals in the local community. The event was a casual mixer, focused on creating local ties within the ASPRS community and providing outreach to students interested in joining ASPRS. ASPRS-WGL Secretary, Ben Redding, gave a brief presentation on new photogrammetric mapping applications using satellite imagery and how this growing technology will affect the remote sensing and geospatial field as the availability of satellite imagery and image quality grows.

The Spotlight Series will rotate locations throughout the Western Great Lakes region on a quarterly basis to encourage participation from our members who rarely attend the larger events. The Western Great Lakes region covers a large geographic area including Minnesota, Wisconsin, the UP of Michigan, northern Illinois and northern Indiana.

Upcoming Spotlight Series Events are planning for Eau Claire, WI, Illinois, and the UP in the following year. Additionally, our annual dinner is planned for February 2nd, 2012, at the Machine Shed restaurant in Lake Elmo, MN. Information for all of these events will be posted as soon as it is possible.

Put simply, we need someone to help us build stuff and figure out solutions to complicated problems. Most of your time will be spent working on geospatial data processing procedures using tools like ArcGIS, GeoKettle, PostGIS, and more. You will also have the opportunity to learn more about PHP, Javascript, MySQL, and other web technologies.

The catch: you MUST be a student at any UW-System institution.
